Topuria vs Gaethje — Why this fight is a stylistic nightmare for both men
Ilia Topuria comes in as the undefeated lightweight champion, the man who knocked out Alexander Volkanovski in two rounds and then stopped Max Holloway with a single short right hand. His one-punch power at 155 lbs is something almost no champion in division history has displayed: short, fast hooks straight down the middle, a constant pressure game and a granite chin he has never been forced to test under fire.
Justin Gaethje is the opposite archetype — a violent, leg-kick-heavy brawler with the most concussive low kicks in the division and a willingness to trade leather that nobody in MMA can match. Against Topuria he has one of two paths: hurt the body and legs early to slow the Spaniard's feet, or risk a firefight in the pocket where Topuria's accuracy has been a death sentence for everyone he has faced.
Our pick: Topuria by KO in rounds 2 or 3. Gaethje is too brave to back up, and that is exactly the engagement Topuria has trained his entire career to punish. But if it goes to a five-round war, Gaethje's gas tank and championship-rounds experience flip the script.
Pereira vs Gane — Interim heavyweight title: kickboxer vs sniper
Alex Pereira jumping up to heavyweight and instantly fighting for an interim belt is the kind of move that only a 6'4" former kickboxing world champion can pull off. His left hook to the body and his trademark left hook to the temple translate directly to 265 lbs, and at this point he is the most feared striker on the planet at any weight class.
Ciryl Gane, though, is a different problem. The French heavyweight has the best footwork in division history, controls range with jabs and teep kicks like a kickboxer, and his only two career losses have come to a grappler (Ngannou) and a wrestling savant (Jones) — never against a striker. If Pereira tries to walk him down like he did at 205 lbs, Gane has the angles to make him miss for 25 minutes.
Our pick: Gane by decision if it stays technical, Pereira by KO if it becomes a phone-booth war. Coin flip. This is the most competitive striker matchup heavyweight has seen since Stipe vs Cormier 2.
